We Might As Well Dance

Madeleine Peyroux

It’s easy to see the things going wrong now
It’s easy to wallow in a sad song
It’s easy to cry over all that is gone now
But I believe that we must carry on

I hear you saying that our best days are past us
I’ve seen you walking through the rubble and stone
Yes I know there’s list of disasters
But time is gonna soothe the soul

So we might as well dance
In the light of the moon
We might as well dance
We’ll be leaving here soon
Might as well dance
While the river is high
We might as well dance
Before you kiss me goodbye

The times are changing and tensions are rising
But fear can never be our guiding light
I’m not a fool, I know what hate is disguising
And only love can bring the will to fight

So we might as well dance
In the light of the moon
We might as well dance…

We Might As Well Dance…

Love this Line:“So I’ll meet you at the bottom if there really is one
They always told me when you hit it you’ll know it
But I’ve been falling so long it’s like gravity’s gone and I’m just floatin’…”

And seems to Rub with…

Text:
Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor.
Exultemus, et in ipso iucundemur.
Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum.
Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero.

Translation:
Where charity and love are, God is there.
Christ’s love has gathered us into one.
Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him.
Let us fear, and let us love the living God.
And may we love each other with a sincere heart.

This song, released a day before July 4th, has layers of meaning (for me). Reminded of Connolly’s entangled account of Job in the prelude to his book Facing the Planetary. The lyrics reach into “Myth and the Planetary”. How do I love thee, oh monstrous America?

Lyrics

Is it love you’re after?
A sign of the flood or one more disaster Don’t do to me what you did to America Don’t do to me what you did to America

I have loved you, I have grieved
I’m ashamed to admit I no longer believe I have loved you, I received
I have traded my life
For a picture of the scenery
Don’t do to me what you did to America Don’t do to me what you did to America

I give it all up in laughter
The sign of the cross awaiting disaster
The dove flew to me like a vision of paranoia The dove flew to me like a vision of paranoia

I have loved you like a dream
I have kissed your lips like a Judas in heat
I have worshipped, I believed
I have broke your bread for a splendor of machinery Don’t look at me like I’m acting hysterical
Don’t look at me like I’m acting hysterical

I have worshipped, I have cried
I have put my hands in the wounds on your side I have tasted of your blood
I have choked on the waters, I abated the flood I am broken, I am beat
But I will find my way like a Judas in heat
I am fortune, I am free
I’m like a fever of light in the land of opportunity

Don’t do to me what you did to America Don’t do to me what you do to yourself Don’t do to me what you did to America Don’t do to me what you do to yourself Don’t do to me what you did to America Don’t do to me what you do to yourself Don’t do to me what you did to America Don’t do to me what you do to yourself

Don’t do to me what you did to America Don’t do to me what you did to America Don’t do to me what you did to America Don’t do to me what you did to America

Lyrics

People, do you understand me now,
If sometimes I feel a little mad
Don’t you know no one alive can
Always be an angel
When things go wrong I seem a little sad
But I’m just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood

You know sometimes, I’m so carefree
With a joy that’s hard to hide
Sometimes seems that all I have is worry
And then you’re bound to see my other side
But I’m just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood

If I seem edgy, I want you to know
That I never mean to take it out on you
Life has its problems and I get more
Than my share
But that’s one thing I never mean to do
I don’t mean it

People, don’t you know I’m only human
Don’t you know I have faults like any one
But sometimes I find myself alone regretting
Some little thing; some foolish thing
That I have done,
But I’m just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood
Don’t let me be misunderstood
I’m just someone whose intentions are good
Don’t let me be misunderstood,
Don’t let me be misunderstood

This child is a very old soul. It is like watching Judy Garland singing Over the Rainbow. A mature person is in that young body, capable of conveying such a transcendent message from the field of all possibility. I wish I spoke Urdu.

Sing a song of sad young men, glasses full of rye
All the news is bad again, kiss your dreams goodbye

All the sad young men, sitting in the bars
Knowing neon nights, and missing all the stars

All the sad young men, drifting through the town
Drinking up the night, trying not to drown

All the sad young men, singing in the cold
Trying to forget, that they’re growing old

All the sad young men, choking on their youth
Trying to be brave, running from the truth

Autumn turns the leaves to gold, slowly dies the heart
Sad young men are growing old, that’s the cruellest part

All the sad young men, seek a certain smile
Someone they can hold, for just a little…

I found this weirdly charming and quirkily synesthetic, as if a robot were to imagine an interpretive dance to a song by some algorithm literally translating the metaphor of roller-coaster emotions into a quaint video game environment.

I can only imagine what this would be like in actual VR; the future has its odd appeals.

Bob Dylan returns to the Orpheum Theatre in Minnesota to perform an updated version of “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” Full lyrics below:

Come gather round people wherever you roam
And admit that our country don’t feel like our home
And that silence speaks louder than those who condone
If a tweet to you is worth favin’
Then lift up your voices and put down your phones
For the times they are a-changin’

Come women and men who hashtag Me Too
And believe me when I say that we believe you
For weak is the man who calls truth “fake news”
Time’s up, our silence we’re breaking
And even though Mel Gibson was in Daddy’s Home 2
Well the times they are a-changin’

Come athletes with platforms throughout the land
Who by taking a knee are taking a stand
And before you shout out that they should be banned
Listen to what they are saying
Perhaps they’d stand up if you reached out your hand
Well the times they are a-changing

Come journalists, writers who report the facts
And brandish your pen to fend off his attacks
Look past what he says and look at how he acts
The fire and fury is raging
For his words can hurt, but your words can fight back
New York Times, they aren’t a-failin’

Come leaders who bully like Internet trolls
We’ll curse you with four-letter words ‘love’ and ‘hope’
For we will go high even when you go low
The order is re-arranging
For you have the power, but we have the vote
The times they are a-changin’

A Death & A Birth with Changing of the Times,

Been in these Waters Before,I am Old Man with Young Human Beings from
my insides,Time to bring Forth some Goodness,Respect & Creativity!!!

Solveigs Sang (Solveig’s Song)

Henrik Ibsen

Her skal jeg vente til du kommer igjen;

og venter du hist oppe, vi træffes der, min Ven!

Solveigs Sang (Solveig’s Song)

English Translation © E. M. Smyth

The winter may pass and the spring disappear,

the summer too will vanish and then the year.

But this I know for certain: thou’lt come back again;

And e’en as I promised, thou’lt find me waiting then.

God help thee, when wand’ring thy way all alone,

God grant thee his strength as thou kneel’st at his throne.

If thou now art waiting in heav’n for me,

O there we’ll meet again love and never parted be!

We have been playing an Edvard Greig compilation for naptimes, instead of Tortoise’s TNT (which still plays repeatedly each night, now over three years of constant rotation!). Likely listened to Greig at various points in life; many of his pieces permeate . . . penetrate . . . pierce . . .prick and probe. Solveig’s Song: my compact disc spins sorrowful strings; this soprano takes the song into uncharted feeling.

Solveig’s Song trickled into my dreams last night: I am in zero gravity. I am floating about an arena, players of a game are spectators as I enter the scene and fly around. I am composed of pieces that shift as my flight continues. I seem to be quiet (at peace) and have my many pieces shift about as Edvard Greig’s piece (descending strings) plays in time with my solo gameplay. The musical piece reflects the movement of my shifting pieces. I am listening to the spectators as I perform a pantomime. In waking life too, I sense the body shifting in the sheets.

The mood of the dream is positive even with the sorrowful music. It wasn’t until late today that I learned of the lyrical play and the deep sorrowful hope that seems to be the author’s (Ibsen’s), composer’s (Grieg’s), and the soprano’s (Marita Solberg’s) intent.

Van Morrison Lyrics

"Roll With The Punches"

One thing I’ve learnt after all these years
You’re gonna save yourself a whole lot of tears
Don’t try to figure out who was wrong and who was right
Got to move along, baby

That’s right, you got to roll with the punches
Yeah, you’ve got to go with the flow
Roll with the punches
Yeah, that’s one thing I know

No use staring at your old photograph
Walkin’ around your neighborhood, gotta tear it in half
Only one way you can clear your tormented mind
Stop thinking she was one of a kind

You’ve got to roll with the punches
Man, you’ve got to go with the flow
Roll with the punches
Oh, that’s the only way to go

No use staring at your old photograph
Walkin’ around your neighborhood, gotta tear it in half
Only one way you can clear your tormented mind
Stop thinking she was just one of a kind

You’ve got to roll with the punches
Man, you’ve got to try and go with the flow
Got to roll with the punches
Man, that’s the only way you go

You’ve got to roll with the punches
Got to roll with the punches
Got to roll with the punches
Man, you’ve got to go with the flow
Roll with the punches
Man that’s the only way to go
Only way to go, yeah, yeah, yeah
