Cosmos Café: Many Types of Intelligence [2024-01-18 & 02-01] - #6 by madrush

What is the Cosmos Café?

Free-spirited group conversations on a wide range of topics in philosophy, cosmology, consciousness studies, and beyond…

Open to all Cosmos members, the Café always welcomes new participants. If you’re new, please introduce yourself below. Cosmos members may also propose their own topics and schedule their own Café sessions, once they have participated in a prior event.

This Week

We’ll be reconvening after a long hiatus, perhaps reviewing some of the conversations we had last year (including series on AI, psychedelics, and the late cultural philosopher William Irwin Thompson’s book, Imaginary Landscapes: Making Worlds of Myth and Science), and looking ahead to what participants would like to explore this year.

One inquiry to get us going could focus on the many types of intelligence beyond (yet including) the human that we tend to disregard in the course of everyday business. Of course, much cultural attention of late has been concerned with “artificial” ways of knowing or extraordinary technologies, but what about ecological, cosmic, and spiritual/intuitive modes of awareness? This interview with James Bridle, author of Ways of Being: Animals, Plants, Machines, and the Search for a Planetary Intelligence, could serve as food for thought, though is not required reading or listening to join the conversation.

You can catch up with our latest explorations in the Cosmos Café channel of the Infinite Conversations forum—and if you’re new and planning to join us, please introduce yourself in the thread below.

A follow-up on one of our needed abilities to Engage our Daily Life in this Moment Time!!!

Lyrics

In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There’s a dying voice within me reaching out somewhere
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair

Don’t have the inclination to look back on any mistake
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break
In the fury of the moment I can see the master’s hand
In every leaf that trembles, and in every grain of sand

Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer
The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay

I gaze into the doorway of temptation’s angry flame
And every time I pass that way, I always hear my name
Then onward in my journey, I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand

I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer’s dream, in the chill of a wintry light
In the bitter dance of loneliness, fading into space
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face

I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there’s someone there, other time it’s only me
I am hanging in the balance of a perfect finished plan
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand

What a remarkable and enjoyable conversation. I just listened to an hour and a half. I am particularly intrigued, delighted and inspired by Marco bringing up water as essential for life. It’s opening me to a whole other perception and feeling of unity. Maybe water is the conduit that connects us… Delicious!!

See you all on Thursday. Andrea

Hi @Ariadne, I’m not sure what happened, but there’s nothing in the system that should be preventing you from posting. I’m sure we’d benefit from your insights, so please do try again or message me with your with your points and I’ll add them here.

I am listening to our last talk and still thinking of how we can develop a multifaceted concept of intelligence, beyond simply the human/artificial dichotomy. What is creative intelligence? What is cooperative intelligence? What might be a planetary or cosmic intelligence? What is the intelligence of the sacred or divine?

And the relationship between time, intelligence, and water… I’d like to deepen that contemplation.

I am looking forward to continuing our conversation. See/hear y’all soon!

Marco,
I would like to re-visit briefly the framing of what is Intelligence?,
and can we do this with acknowledging our human bias and how
being Open does not dismiss ours, maybe Invigorates -Jazzes

Hi Marco, yes, I agree that the human/AI argument is not that profoundly
interesting to me…compared to Michael’s question below and the
spectrum of intelligences diverse and strange and illuminating,
including the Elementals! Below some notes I wrote down before seeing
your email.
Do hope the discussion goes deeper…
Thanks, Maia
PS: it was me who posted the link to the book you guys briefly
mentioned.
Michael or Ed asked about a Cafe around it, but even that good book is
too full of AI for me!

Love seeing the new faces!

Michael’s question: what is intelligence FOR (ie, what is its task?)
truly feels key to me. Rather than debating artificial vs natural, I am
as always most interested in where natural and natural meet: human and
more than.Especially in the full diverse spectrum of human and other
than human intelligences (plural, and I mean all of them at all scales)
and how we can collaborate with each other to foster beauty, truth and
goodness on this planet.

Water, yes! A central “being” in See You In Our Dreams.
For my Tsalagi ancestors, water is a truly great spiritual being: I
would say that water is definitely among
the sacred Connectors of beings/Being. At least on our planet, life and
water are inseparable.
A small amount of salt is literally essential, too, in fact, completely
desalinated water is actually a toxic substance, alien to bodies/life.
Also salty water conducts electricity, so our cells can
talk to each other. Too much salt and no salt are poison!
Body intelligences know this and how to continually balance…
If only human ego/personalities were as wise…

Thanks, Maía. In the back of my mind, I had been thinking of See You In Our Dreams during our discussion of the intelligence of water.

The notion of a spectrum of intelligences also feels very natural to me.
