âThe Circle Between Raven and Serpentâ
Long ago, when the world was still being woven, Raven and Serpent were given a single task: to guard the Circle of Balance. The Circle was life itselfâendless, without beginning or end, flowing like rivers and returning like the seasons.
Raven, the watcher of the skies, brought vision, laughter, and the sharpness of truth. Serpent, the keeper of the earth, carried renewal, transformation, and the wisdom of the deep places. At first, they argued. Raven said, âThe sky is greater, for it sees far and holds the sun.â Serpent replied, âThe earth is greater, for it feeds all and holds the roots.â
Their quarrel shook the world, until Creator placed them both within the Circle. There they learned: neither sky nor earth is greater, for each needs the other. The flight of Raven means nothing without the ground to rise from, and the strength of Serpent means nothing without the winds to carry change.
The people were taught that when Raven and Serpent meet, the Circle is whole. Light and shadow, sky and soil, death and renewalâall are bound together, just as each life is woven into the greater pattern.
Elders still say: âWalk as Raven and Serpentâhold both sky and earth within you. Only then will you honor the Circle that gives us breath.â
And so, the image of Raven and Serpent in eternal embrace remains a sacred reminder that balance is not found in choosing one side, but in walking the path where opposites meet.
